Myotherapy Information

What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is a form of manual therapy with treatment focusing on the musculoskeletal system to relieve bodily pains like shoulder ache, stiff joints, numbness, and tingling sensations in the body. The physical therapy focuses on physical manipulation of the soft tissue to provide relief from the above mentioned conditions and related issues. It is also known as massage therapy because of the nature of its treatment. The technique is a medical discipline which is followed in many countries including Australia. It is a fairly new form of medicine which arose roughly forty years ago.

A typical myotherapy session involves stimulating the musculoskeletal system through muscle stretching, application of acupressure on certain points, acupuncture, and the use of muscle energy techniques. You should also expect extensive evaluation of your physique, that is, the muscles which are showing signs of distress, nerves, and joints.

Effectiveness of Myotherapy

The effectiveness of Myotherapy was evaluated by the Australian Government's Department of Health in 2015 when they released a list of alternate therapies which were suitable for being covered under a health insurance. Myotherapy was one of the 17 medicines which were evaluated but there was no proof of effectiveness found to support the therapy and thus, it is not covered under the government's schemes. Despite this, patients have continually stated that myotherapy has been beneficial to them and has worked wonders for many.

The following benefits of myotherapy have been observed by many patients:

Headaches and Migraines

The soft tissue technique used by myotherapists digs deep into the soft tissue of the patient's head and neck. The massage encourages circulation which leads to more supply of nutrients to the head. Acupuncture techniques target points that increase the production of endorphins and reduce the production of cortisol.

Pregnancy Related Conditions

Pregnancy can be a difficult time in any woman's life and myotherapy provides relaxation to ease the stress.
Myotherapists perform special pregnancy massages which ease the common discomforts experienced by pregnant ladies such as swelling of ankles and feet, headaches, etc.

Joint Pain and Stiffness

Joint pain and reduced mobility is a common problem which is experienced by individuals leading highly stressful lives.
The restricted joint movement can be treated by the use of myotherapy treatments that manipulate the soft tissue and help you feel more relaxed.

Injuries Because of Sports

Many people who love sports also experience injuries from time to time. When an injury is too painful or uncomfortable, myotherapy can help.
Myotherapists massage deep into the painful points and reduce the stress in order to improve their movement leading to faster recovery times and improved performance.
