A facial is a very common procedure for skin care, which involves a variety of skin treatments. These treatments can include: steam, face masks, exfoliation, peels, and massage. Facials are generally performed in beauty parlours and it is women that usually go for the treatments. It is a relaxing indulgence that many would like to experience but it comes at a price, which many would not like to spend. You do not need to spend vast amounts of money on a beautician for a relaxing experience and beautiful skin. All you need is some of your time and effort.
To perform a facial for yourself, you need to first determine your skin type so you can get the right products for yourself. There are basically four skin types and each type can be identified through the following information:
• Combination – your forehead, nose, and chin are oily while the temples and the cheeks are either normal or dry. Your skin's oiliness changes with seasons.
• Oily – your skin almost always looks oily and moist. Your pores get clogged often and you are prone to acne, cysts, blackheads, and whiteheads.
• Normal – your complexion is balanced, does not look oily or shiny, and you never have any breakouts.
• Dry – your skin tends to get patches, it often feels rough, and using skin care products can cause your skin to feel irritated.

1. Open your pores – dip a face towel in warm water, rinse out the excess water, and place it on your face to encourage the pores to open up.
2. Cleanse – get a gentle cleanser based on your skin type and use it to gently wash your face. Gently massage it into your skin and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. The opened pores will let the cleanser clean deeply.
3. Exfoliate – Use a gentle exfoliator to gently remove the dead skin cells on your face. Make sure you get one which has small and soft granules as opposed to large and harsh ones.
4. Steam – hold your face over a bowl of boiled water for a few minutes. Make sure you cover your head with a towel. Add any essential oils to the water if you want to.
5. Face mask – the steam will open up your pores so the face mask can work at its best. Choose a mask which suits your skin type and follow the instructions as given on the mask's pack.
6. Tone – apply an alcohol free toner to your skin to close the pores.
7. Moisturise – use a moisturiser based on your skin type to wrap up the facial.
